Spotify will now pay its podcast hosts based on how much engagement their shows receive, as announced by the company on Wednesday.

The music platform has been dominating the music streaming industry for years and now announced a “Partner Program”, allowing creators to monetise their content other than ad revenue to stay dominant in the video podcast space alongside YouTube.

“By giving you, the creators, another path to monetisation beyond ads, we’re freeing you up to spend more time doing what you love: creating,” Spotify CEO Daniel Ek stated at a Spotify Creator event in Los Angeles.

While creators can already monetise their podcasts on Spotify, it is now encouraging podcasters to expand their content by introducing incentives for publishing video components alongside their audio podcasts.

Moreover, Spotify Premium subscribers will now be able to watch video podcasts ad-free, providing an uninterrupted viewing experience.

Spotify also revealed that the number of creators publishing videos monthly on the platform has grown by more than 50% year-on-year with more than 300,000 video podcast shows available on the platform.

According to Spotify, these changes will come into effect from January 2, 2025, in the US, the UK, Australia, and Canada.
