Following the immense success of 2023's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Nintendo and Illumination are joining forces once again for a new animated Mario film, set to premiere on April 3, 2026.

This exciting announcement was made by the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto through Nintendo of America's X Twitter account, coinciding with the ongoing Mario Day festivities. While specifics about the film are limited at this point, Miyamoto hinted at an expanded universe for Mario, promising a vibrant and joyful storyline.

It's unclear if this upcoming film will serve as a direct sequel to its predecessor. Chris Meledandri of Illumination, alongside Miyamoto, mentioned in a recent video announcement that the team is already deeply engaged in the creative process, including storyboarding and designing sets for novel environments.

The animation phase is expected to commence shortly. The film's initial release in the United States and other select regions is planned for April 3, 2026, with a broader release scheduled for later in the month.

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" set new benchmarks in the box office, becoming the top-grossing video game movie during its opening. By early June, it had amassed an impressive $1.3 billion worldwide, as reported by Variety. For those who missed its theatrical release or wish to relive the experience, AMC Theaters is planning a re-screening on June 28, as revealed by GoNintendo.
