Telegram, a popular social media platform, is on track to reach one billion active users within a year. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov confirmed: "Telegram is spreading like forest fire."

In an interview to journalist Tucker Carlson — which was posted on X (formerly Twitter) — the CEO said: "We'll probably cross one billion monthly active users within a year now."

Durov — the owner of a $15.5 billion fortune — revealed that several governments attempted to impose pressure on him, but his communications platform stayed independent and did not become a "player in geopolitics."

It should be noted that Telegram — a social media platform which is baed in Dubai — was launched by the 39-year-old entrepreneur in 2013.

Telegram presently has 900 million active users, while its competitor WhatsApp has more than two billion monthly active users.

Durov fled his own country in 2014 when he faced pressure from the Russian government after launching encrypted texting built by his brother. "I would rather be free than to take orders from anyone," he mentioned.

Meanwhile, The Financial Times reported that Telegram is likely to seek a US listing once the company has achieved profitability.

Telegram is popular in Russia and is regarded as one of the most popular apps, following Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and WeChat.
