Meta’s Threads has introduced a new "activity status" feature that lets users see when people on the app are online, as announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri on Tuesday (October 15).

Threads activity status feature

Introduced in 2023, the Meta-owned app could not surface real time events and trends, lagging behind X (formerly Twitter). However, with this new feature, Threads aims to boost real-time activity on its app.

"We’re rolling out activity status as a way to help you find others to engage with in real-time. Only people who have activity status turned on will be able to see when you’re online, and you can turn this off within your settings at any time,” Mosseri stated.

Earlier, X also introduced an indicator to show users online, but later, the company scrapped this feature.

Mosseri also shared a screenshot of how the Threads’ new activity status feature will work. The app shows a green dot to indicate that a user is currently online on Threads.

Similar to Instagram, Threads users will be able to switch off the activity status in the app’s settings. However, turning off the activity status will prevent users from seeing other people’s online status.

The activity status feature has started to roll out to Threads users.
