Competition in the market for handheld gaming consoles is intensifying with each passing day, with the Nintendo Switch 2, Steam Deck, and PlayStation Portal leading the charge.

Despite the powerful offerings of the Xbox Series X and S, console sales of this generation have been underwhelming.

Xbox has attempted to capture a bigger market share through announcements like Game Pass and the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

However, a solution seems to be on the horizon in the form of a dedicated Xbox handheld, sparking significant interest among fans. While details about this handheld console are scarce, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer offered a glimpse into its key specs.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Spencer confirmed that Xbox is exploring handheld options and currently testing prototypes. However, he emphasised that the company’s short-term focus is on enhancing the Xbox app for existing devices.

Despite Spencer’s comments, Windows Central’s Jez Cordon, citing insider sources, hinted that 2025 could put the wraps off new Xbox handheld hardware. However, he outlined that this announcement is less likely to be featured at The Game Awards.
