The wave of layoffs in the United States shows no signs of slowing down, as multinational e-commerce company, eBay, also joined the ranks of those sacking employees.

The e-commerce retailer announced its decision to sack 1,000 employees, or approximately 9% of its current workforce.

In a letter shared with the employees, eBay CEO Jamie Lannone said: "While we are making progress against our strategy, our overall headcount and expenses have outpaced the growth of our business.”

"To address this, we're implementing organizational changes that align and consolidate certain teams to improve the end-to-end experience, and better meet the needs of our customers around the world."

It should be noted that several tech companies, including Google and Amazon, have started laying off staff, which was hired during the COVID-19 pandemic.

eBay along with firing 1,000 employees will also scale back the number of contracts within its alternative workforce over the coming months, Lannone added in the note.

Last February, eBay announced plans to lay off 500 employees globally, representing 4% of its total workforce.
