Volkswagen shift to Tesla's charging standard signals a significant step towards standardisation in EV charging infrastructure

In a strategic move, Volkswagen and its subsidiaries, including Audi, Porsche, and Scout Motors, have announced their adoption of Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) for electric vehicles. 

This shift is set to commence in 2025, signaling a significant step towards standardisation in the electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Volkswagen explore Tesla supercharger connectivity

Volkswagen's commitment extends beyond future models, as the automaker explores the possibility of providing adapters to existing vehicle owners. 

This move aims to enable Volkswagen's electric vehicles to connect seamlessly with Tesla's extensive Supercharger network, comprising over 15,000 stations across North America.

Tesla supercharger cains traction across automotive industry

The embrace of Tesla's NACS is not unique to Volkswagen, as a growing number of prominent automakers pledge their support. General Motors, Volvo, Polestar, Mercedes, Honda, BMW, Lucid, and others have all committed to incorporating NACS charging capabilities into their electric vehicle models within the coming years. 

This collective industry-wide adoption is positioning Tesla's charging solution as the de facto standard in North America.

ChargePoint and Electrify America join NACS movement

The momentum behind NACS extends beyond automakers, with charging network providers actively integrating the standard. ChargePoint initiated NACS support in its electric vehicle charging network in October, while Electrify America plans to introduce the NACS connector at its stations by 2025. 

These developments underscore the industry's collaborative effort to establish a unified and efficient electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
