Hours after grappling with a widespread, global outage on Wednesday, the entire array of Meta-owned platforms including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook has reportedly been restored.
The outage started at around 10:58pm, disrupting users' access to the Meta-owned social media apps. According to an outage tracking website DownDetector, an exponential surge was observed in complaints submitted by users across platforms.
Data on the outage tracking site showed around 22,000 users reported disruptions with Facebook, with more than 18,000 users facing problems when sending messages on WhatsApp. Instagram users were also reportedly unable to access the app and upload content, with around 70,000 reports being lodged as the outage intensified.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Meta acknowledged the issue and stated: “Thanks for bearing with us! We’re 99% of the way there – just doing some last checks. We apologise to those who’ve been affected by the outage.”
The outage underscores the increasing dependency on Meta’s diversified ecosystem, which is currently serving up to 3.19 billion daily active users worldwide.
