WhatsApp is set to roll out an augmented reality (AR) feature for various tasks, like call effects and filters, and it’s offered to some beta testers currently.
Meta-owned messaging platform integrates a new level of personalisation and interactivity into video calls, making them more interactive and engaging. It seems that WhatsApp now intends to provide iOS users the same opportunity to discover new augmented reality features as it already does for the Android version.
Some beta testers can now discover new tools to improve their video calling experience. One of the most essential features is the lineup of dynamic facial filters offered. These filters let users customise their appearance in real-time during video calls, modifying the overall colour tone of their video feed.
Additionally, the instant messaging platform has introduced a background editing tool that provides even more options to personalise video calls. This tool lets users either blur their surroundings or change them with one of the pre-set backgrounds offered by WhatsApp.
Moreover, another major addition is the low-light mode toggle, developed to improve visibility in dimly lit environments. With a simple toggle, it is possible to enhance the lighting quality of their video feed, making it simpler for users to communicate even when natural light is lacking. This feature is specifically useful for evening calls or for users who frequently find themselves in low-light conditions.

Complementing these tools is the touch-up mode, which acts as a subtle filter to smooth out skin imperfections and offer users a more enhanced appearance on video calls.
By offering tools like colour filters, background editing, low-light mode, and touch-up mode, WhatsApp ensures that users can customise their video calls to suit any occasion, as these features cater to a wide range of needs, making it simpler to adjust the visual mood of their communication.
It is worth noting that WhatsApp will automatically remember the previous configuration settings when placing a new video call, like the selected background and colour filter. This means that users don't have to repeatedly adjust their settings each time they start a new call as WhatsApp will always apply the last used background and filter.
An AR feature for call effects and filters is offered to some beta testers who download the latest versions of WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app, and it's expected to be available to more people soon.
