As part of its frequently conducted ritual, the renowned messaging app WhatsApp is reportedly working to replace users’ phone numbers with usernames to further protect user privacy on the platform.
According to WABetaInfo, besides the integration of a substitute for contact numbers, the Meta-owned instant messaging app is expected to introduce a "PIN" feature soon which would function in concurrence with the first feature.
Usernames on WhatsApp
This means that strangers will no longer be able to contact a user just by using the username. And to make it happen, they will also require your "username PIN" to contact you.

Rumour has it that the PIN is likely to be four digits long, with no restriction on the length of usernames.
If comes to fruition, the feature would add an extra layer of safety from unwanted calls, messages, and group invites on WhatsApp. As stated by the publication, it was spotted in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android (2.24.18.2).
The noteworthy point here is that users' existing contacts will remain intact and won't require a username PIN to get in touch.
