Pakistan continues to grapple with slow internet speeds, with many users expressing frustration over the ongoing disruptions. In response, government officials have pointed fingers at VPN usage as a key contributor to the issue. Despite this, VPNs remain widely used across the country, as people seek to bypass restrictions and maintain access to various online services.

Earlier this month, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) denied reports claiming that the authority was blocking VPNs. “… no such action has been taken and all kinds of blocking is undertaken only under the directions of government of Pakistan in accordance with legal frameworks and guidelines,” the clarification note read.

Last week, Jang reported that the PTA had requested the Ministry of IT to register VPNs. However, when Gadinsider contacted PTA spokesperson Malahat Ubaid, she stated that this wasn't a new development.

“VPNs are being whitelisted for last few years in Pakistan. Nothing new,” she said, adding that the process is ongoing.

The whitelisting of VPNs is part of the government’s broader strategy to regulate internet usage and address security concerns. However, critics argue that this approach could further complicate Pakistan's internet landscape, potentially disrupting both personal and business communications.
