The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announced on Thursday that all banks will be closed on November 9 (Saturday) in observance of Iqbal Day. This follows the federal government’s decision to declare November 9 a public holiday nationwide, commemorating the 147th birth anniversary of Allama Iqbal.
Known as the "Poet of the East," Allama Iqbal was a key figure who inspired Muslims in the sub-continent to strive for independence from British rule and advocate for a separate homeland. Born in Sialkot in 1877, Iqbal was a celebrated poet and philosopher whose poetry and political vision played a pivotal role in shaping the demand for Pakistan.
His 1930 Allahabad address was instrumental in defining a distinct identity and direction for Muslims in the region, laying the groundwork for the creation of Pakistan.
Iqbal Day is observed with prayers in mosques for national prosperity, a Change of Guards ceremony at Iqbal’s mausoleum in Lahore, and events across the country honouring his legacy as Pakistan’s national poet.
