Social media platform X (Formerly Twitter), is now testing a free version of its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Grok, which was initially only accessible to Premium users.

Developed by xAI, a company led by Elon Musk, Grok is designed to respond to user questions, perform tasks, and even analyse images using advanced AI technology.

This move is part of X’s strategy to broaden its user base and gather feedback, allowing the chatbot to compete with popular AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.

Recently, several app researchers noticed that a free version of Grok was available to select users in certain regions. TechCrunch confirmed that X is currently testing this feature for free users in New Zealand, though with limited access.

Free users are allowed 10 queries every two hours with the Grok-2 model, 20 queries with the lighter Grok-2 mini model, and three image analysis questions per day.

How to access Grok AI free

To access Grok for free, users must have an X account that’s at least seven days old and linked to a verified phone number. xAI launched the latest version, Grok-2, in August with image generation capabilities.

This version is powered by Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 model and, in October, added the ability to understand and respond to image-based questions.

By opening up access to free users, X aims to attract a larger audience to Grok, encouraging faster feedback that could drive improvements and innovations in the AI chatbot features.
