X (formerly Twitter) is taking a significant step towards clarifying the authenticity of accounts on the platform by introducing new labels for parody or fan commentary accounts.

The new label for parody accounts is designed to help X users distinguish between genuine and satirical content on the site.

Currently, some parody accounts on X include the word "parody" in their display names or bios. However, many users still mistakenly identify such parody accounts as authentic.

The new label, expected to be rolled out soon, will identify these accounts with a "Parody account" label below the username on the profile page and individual posts.

However, implementing this label may present challenges for X. The platform will need to ensure that all parody accounts comply with its authenticity policy, which prohibits impersonation with the intent to spread misinformation.

It is important to note that X's Authenticity Policy already includes a clause for parody accounts, allowing them on the platform as long as they comply with the rules and do not attempt to impersonate other users’ profiles.

Notably, X has already introduced a labelling system for automated bot accounts that use X’s API to post updates automatically. However, not all bot accounts adhere to this policy and display the required label.
