Uber on Tuesday announced its decision to cease its operation in Pakistan; however, it will continue to operate through subsidiary brand Careem.

In a statement released by the company, the Uber spokesperson said: “We’ve made the decision to cease operating the Uber app in Pakistan.

“Our subsidiary brand Careem will continue to operate, with the Careem app offering ride-hailing services across Pakistan and earning opportunities for drivers.’’

The decision comes almost a year after Uber ceased operating the Uber app in Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar and Islamabad back in October 2022. The Uber app was only available in Lahore until today’s decision.

The spokesperson added that when the company acquired Careem, it was always their belief that the two companies could come together to complement each other’s strengths and better serve the region through tailored experiences.

It should be noted that Careem rides operates in 10 cities across Pakistan: Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Multan, Faisalabad, Abbottabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Quetta.

The Uber spokesperson added that the decision is in line with Uber’s global growth strategy as per which they focus on markets where they have opportunities for sustainable growth.
